Visiting KL Plaszow – A Walk Through Difficult History
Just a few kilometers from the center of Kraków lies a place that still bears silent witness to one of the darkest chapters of the 20th century. In 1942, the Germans established a forced labor camp here, which later became a concentration camp Konzentrationslager Plaszow. Thousands of people were imprisoned, mistreated, and murdered in this area. Most of them Jews displaced after the liquidation of the Kraków ghetto in March 1943.
But KL Plaszow held more than just local victims. Jews from other parts of occupied Europe, as well as Poles and Roma, were also brought here. The Gestapo carried out mass executions on site, and only fragments of the camp’s infrastructure and surrounding cemeteries remain as evidence of what happened.
During the tour, we’ll visit the key parts of the former camp: remnants of Jewish cemeteries, preserved elements of the camp’s structure and several monuments commemorating the victims.
This is not a typical sightseeing tour. It’s a journey of remembrance, an attempt to understand what happened here and to reflect on Kraków’s wartime history. With the help of a guide, we’ll uncover what is no longer visible at first glance, but what remains essential to remember.
